Scouts in the out-of-doors.  Imagine having hands-on knowledge setting up a campsite,
pitching a tent, hiking, outdoor cooking — all the skills necessary to see the outdoor
program of the Boy Scouts of America come to life.

This new training course is designed for new adult leaders to learn the outdoor skills

campfire programs, map reading and compass skills, hiking and packing techniques,

the youth you serve. It will increase your comfort level and give your confidence as a

Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills is the required outdoor training for all
Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are
based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook.  The course is also ideal
for Venturing leaders since it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in
leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.  Webelos leaders are highly
encouraged to attend this training.  Cub Scout leaders are also welcome to participate in
this training.

NYLT
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for
councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in
their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

For many years, junior leader training (JLT) was an important part of the leadership
training continuum of BSA local councils throughout America. In 2003 and 2004, a task
force of leadership experts and hundreds of Scouts in pilot courses across the nation
reviewed and tested every aspect of the new NYLT syllabus, which incorporates the
latest leadership ideas and presents fresh, vital and meaningful training for today's
Scouts.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must
KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on
HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the
Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a six-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with
an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting
concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of
memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills
much faster.

Built on the legacy of past JLT successes, the new NYLT integrates the best of modern
leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through
activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT
participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the
skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and
adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best
Scouting has to offer.

Troop Leadership Training (TLT) is Council level seven-hour training session
for all new Scout leaders. TLT is designed to introduce the Scout leader to leadership
and give him the initial skills to be an effective leader.   Through this training we enable
Junior Leaders and Scoutmaster to go back to their unit and provide an effect Troop level
TLT.

The University of Scouting is an outstanding training program for all Scouting
adults – Boy Scout leaders, Venturing leaders, and Commissioners. You are invited to
join us for a day of learning, fellowship, and fun.

Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow is an annual get-together of Cub Scout leaders
from an entire council or district. A pow wow is a training conference that takes place in a
festive atmosphere.

The pow wow is a "convention" for pack leaders—the Cubmaster should take all leaders
to this learning extravaganza. There are sections on games, crafts, skits and puppets,
ceremonies, administration, and the Webelos den. It's a time for parents and all
experienced, new, and prospective leaders to share ideas and see what the other packs
are doing.
